What Are Muscle Energy Techniques (METs)?

METs are a combination of contractions and stretches to elongate muscles and help regain strength.

The contractions can be direct (autogenic inhibition) or indirect (reciprocal inhibition) in relation to the muscles that are being stretched. The patient performs an active resisted contraction (<25% force). The muscles are then passively stretched to the end ROM and passively brought back to neutral before repeating.
